Food Being Fed: Diamond Naturals Small Breed Puppy Food

Soft Food Feeding Directions

  • Do the following 2 times per a day for the first 5-7 days.
  • Get a saucer and something to cover it with.
  • Place 1/4 cup of pup’s dry food in it.
  • Cover food with HOT tap water.
  • Place cover on saucer and let food soak for 15 minutes.
  • Drain most of the excess water, if there is any.
  • Mix in 1 small tablespoon of human baby chicken based food or canned dog food (if needed).
  • Put food next to the bowl of dry food and leave down for 30 minutes. Can refrigerate leftovers and use in PM.

Hard Food Feeding Directions

First week: We leave dry food down at all times for the first 5-7 days.

After First Week: Feed 3 times a day. Fill bowl of food and put down for 20 minutes and let puppy eat as much as it wants. Pick up after 20 minutes and bowel movement normally within 30-45 minutes after eating. They may not eat a lot the first few times you do this, as they were used to you leaving the food down. Do not follow the feeding directions on the dog food you purchase. Puppies are like growing kids – sometimes they eat a lot and sometimes they hardly eat at all.

Once housetrained you can leave food out all the time if you choose.

Fresh Water Should Be Available at All Times

For the 5-7 days, keep a ½ teaspoon of LIGHT Karo Syrup (normally in baking aisle of grocery stores) mixed in the water. Be sure to change the water daily to avoid any bacteria growth. This will help to keep sugar levels up through the transitions in homes.
